Installation Notes

The following is a collection of notes I use when arranging my work. I'm still working on these, and they will probably change.

Types of Works

My practice can be broken up into types of works (like projects or series). Each type has its own notes that I would apply when the object is installed as part of an installation of only my work or in another context, like a group exhibition or in a collection.

DIPCJUT are events, so they cannot be directly exhibited. Therefor, to include them in an exhibition after they have been completed, you must use documentation of the original event. The ideal situation is to project video documentation of the event in a separate, black room with some seating at regular intervals. It is also acceptable to show photographic documentation, to describe the event taking place, or otherwise represent the work.

ESBXJOHT

ESBXJOHT are always exhibited in clear plastic "sign holders" that display them upright and leaning back slightly. Framed this way, an ESBXJOHT should be placed onto a roughly level surface that is preexisting in the room where it will be display. This surface can be a shelf, a table, a desk, etc., but should not be introduced in order to display the ESBXJOHT, and should serve at least one other function simultaneously. For example, it would be inappropriate to show an ESBXJOHT on a pedestal unless it was already holding up another sculpture, or to bring a desk into a the center of a gallery in a museum to allow for the display of an ESBXJOHT. The floor is not an eligible surface.

If this surface has straight edges, avoid placing the work such that the horizontal edges of the paper are parallel or perpendicular to any nearby edge. In other words, the ESBXJOHT should be at least slightly askew. For example, if an ESBXJOHT is installed on a rectangular table, it should not line up with any of the four edges of the table. It is also best to avoid placing an ESBXJOHT in the exact center of a given surface.

Although a framed ESBXJOHT is displayed like a sculpture, remember that it has a "face" and should be oriented accordingly. Place the ESBXJOHT thinking of the views of the actual drawing. Sometimes, the drawing can be faced in accordance with the function of the surface it rests on. For example, it may face the person sitting at the desk on which it is installed.

Note: ESBXJOHT works can be exhibited on UBCMF works. In other words, an UBCMF is a valid surface for the display of an ESBXJOHT. See below.

SFGFSFODF

SFGFSFODF are instances of the "WikiMedia" software (which was built to run Wikipedia). They are installed on a cluster of servers, but can be viewed from any internet-ready computer terminal. If they are to be exhibited, they should only be shown on a native computer (meaning a computer should not be introduced into a site in order to display a SFGFSFODF). In such cases, the computer's browser should be set so that it's default homepage is the SFGFSFODF on display, and should only be exhibited on one computer at a time. No signage should be placed around the computer to indicate that it is being used to display the work, but it should be included on any relevant listing of works (on a checklist for an exhibition, for example).

The computer should continue it's normal use (except that it's browser's homepage is now set to a SFGFSFODF) unless someone requests to use it to view the SFGFSFODF. Any such request should be honored if possible (even if it means a brief interruption in the use of the computer). It is alright to observe the viewer while they use the computer (especially if it contains sensitive information, or has other active windows), but don't pressure them to hurry while looking at the SFGFSFODF. A computer should be selected carefully that can be used for this purpose at any time. Also, no one should encourage the viewing of an installed SFGFSFODF by explaining the mechanism of their display. It is better to wait for a request.

UBCMF

UBCMF are small, low cedar sculptures. An UBCMF should only ever sit on the floor. Any sort of pedestal, regardless of context, is inappropriate.

When placing an UBCMF, choose a "guide wall." The UBCMF doesn't need to be right next to this wall, but several key decisions about its placement will be made in relation to the guide wall, and it should generally be closer to the guide wall than any other wall. No sides of the UBCMF's surface should be parallel to the guide wall (and shouldn't be parallel to any other walls where possible). Also, avoid placing an UBCMF such that someone might describe it as being "in a corner."

In some cases, it will be appropriate to place the UBCMF very close to its guide wall, and in other cases it may be far enough away that it will not be obvious that it was placed in relation to a wall. This will depend on the situation. But it is always better to think about the placement in relation to the guide wall, regardless of how obvious the relationship will be to a viewer. Consider the angle created between the axes of the UBCMF and the wall, the distance from the wall, and the relationship between the UBCMF and anything hanging on the guide wall.

UP EFGBDF

UP EFGBDF is a series of books. Each is 12 pages, 6 sheets of paper bound with a staple in the upper left corner.

An UP EFGBDF should only be displayed on an UBCMF (See the installation notes for UBCMF for more information). It may be be left open or closed. As they are books, UP EFGBDF works may be carefully interacted with. It will be natural for a viewer looking through an UP EFGBDF to sit on the floor in front of the UBCMF that it's resting on, so be sure to allow ample space for him or her to sit for awhile.

Just like the SFGFSFODF works, when installed in public an UP EFGBDF may be looked through only by request. Offer the guest gloves with which to turn the pages. No signage should be placed around the UP EFGBDF to indicate that it may be looked through or inviting such a request. Also, no one should encourage the looking through of an installed UP EFGBDF by explaining the mechanism of their display. It is better to wait for a request. It is also best not to adjust the way the books is placed once a viewer is done looking at it, however each person who looks at the book may choose to leave it on the UBCMF in an intentional way.

An UP EFGBDF should never have its pages hanging far off the edge of the UBCMF, nor should it look disheveled in its placement.

USBEF drawings are to be framed and hung on the wall. When placing an USBEF, imagine you're hanging a large painting.
